Hotter than 9 Kinds of Hell

The title to this post doesn't refer to the Chicago Cubs. They lost two of three to the Phillies and the Astros keep winning. Before today's game, the Cubs were five back of Houston. They're done. As you can see from the volume of Cubs related posts, I've pretty much signed off on this season.

What a horrible feeling.

All of the preseason questions keep replaying themselves in my head. Will Wood and Prior get 30 starts? No. Will Corey Patterson finally establish himself as a leadoff hitter? Yes...in AAA Iowa. It's another summer gone to waste from a baseball standpoint, and the near World Series team of 2003 seems a long ways away. Sure, they haven't been healthy since that season, but that doesn't make it any easier. We still have to watch them struggle. And sure, they're at .500 right now and have a shot at their third consecutive winning season, something that has never happened in my life as a Cubs fan. But that's the problem with the Bartman ball, they were so close that expectations rose and simply winning was no longer enough. Not sure how it happened, the Cubs were now favorites, a stigma/honor that should be gone by next season. Will Dusty be back? Who knows? Maybe it's time for a change, it seems like he's done as much with this group as he can. That's a shame, because I like Dusty, the first Cubs manager I can say that about since Zimmer. But Nomar is back tomorrow, hoo-ray.

Looks like it's time to get swept up in the baseball euphoria of my surroundings, much like I have the past two seasons. The Red Sox have won eight straight and opened up a five game cushion over the Yankees.

In other news, we are officially less than a month away from the first Nebraska football game of the season. It's exciting now, but looks to be just as quizzical and potentially disappointing as the Cubs. What has happened to the world we used to live in? The Cubs are good, but not good enough, and the Huskers are worse than they've ever been. Strange times indeed.

(Bonus points for anyone who made the connection between the title and photo of this post. You're a great American.)

The Cubs are as hopeless as the Kansas City Royals and the Colorado Rockies. You can even throw in Tampa Bay Devil Rays for a door prize. I do agree that this season is in the history books and it is time to start looking to next year.

And for the Huskers, someone on the radio the other day said something about a record of 3-8. Now wouldn't that be something. Fire a coach two years ago that wins nine games and hire a coach that can't get to that many wins after two seasons at the helm. Only time will tell.

My prediction is 6-3, but if they lose the second game of the season at home to Wake Forest then I will have to agree with the radio guy. How sad!

I'm not much for the Cubs, sorry, but in my opinion the Huskers can't and won't do any worse than last year or their worst season in modern Husker history, 2002. Beating McNeese St., Troy St., Arizona St., and Utah St., really padded the record. As for this season, having the worst quarterback in Nebraska history transfer is only going to help out. I could go on and on but I won't. Go Giants!!! (Still in it in the NL West. What a joke.)
