After a stern reprimand at halftime of my weekly picks by the Yun' Ball Coach, I'm back for four more. And they will all be stretches.
Miami (OH) @
Temple +23
So I couldn't cover against Temple with that other Miami team or Clemson at home, so it only seems fitting that the alma mater of Wally Scamscamziak will get it done. This might be the best realization I made all week! I blocked that gut punch like King Hippo.
Not THE Ohio U. @
Buffalo +4
That's what this week has come to...Ohio-Buffalo games. All I know is that Buffalo is perennially one of the worst teams in the EA Sports game and that's good enough for me. C'mon Frankie!!!
UTEP @
Rice +19
Navy was able to roll Rice (sushi anyone?) at home and they're still running an offense from 1945. The Flying Miners should be able to do it even better.
Oklahoma @
Nebraska -1
The Oh-How-the-Mighty-Have-Fallen Bowl. How long has it been since an OU-NU game was between two unranked teams? Here's a better question: Did anyone in the country think that, going in to this season, Nebraska would be favored in this game? I doubt it. This whole game rides on how effective Adrian Peterson can be. If he plays at even 80%, the Sooners pry pull it out, but in a week full of ho-hum games, I'll take the Huskers and either be doubly happy, or doubly sad. (I will chew Doublemint gum regardless.)

Brando! Thanks for not letting me down! I knew you'd have your scarlet-colored glasses on and go with the Huskers. I cant fault you, given your upbringing, but aside from the brainwashing you recieved as a young lad in Nebraska what makes you think NU will win this game?
OU has only lost to teams that are now ranked, two of those being in the top 6. They are one of few teams that actually improve from week to week. NU hasnt beaten anybody that will be in a bowl game and should have lost to Pitt. Granted, their win over Baylor was in Waco and didnt take overtime, but add AD to the mix and the OU offense is looking much improved heading into this one. I dont think the boys in the more feminine red have a chance even if they are at home.
We shall see, I didnt think the Frogs would be able to go into Norman and win either. I guess thats why they play them! Heres to hoping you're wrong! Ill be there to see it all unfold! Good luck to you this week. You need it!
In response to the anonymous post above, one important factor was left out. The Huskers and the Sooners match up pretty evenly statically, but in terms of pure talent Oklahoma takes the cake. However, Nebraska's version of Memorial Stadium has been much louder and hostile than it has been since I first began attending games in the early 90's. Homefield advantage is at least worth 10 points. The presence of the 95 National Champs won't hurt matters.
This is a huge game for the BIG RED as 10 or so recruits will be visiting. It will also make or break our season. Go Big Red!!
Some very astute points in the first post, until we get to the "more feminine red" comment. How is scarlet more ladylike than crimson, aside from the way it sounds? Find me one person who would say crimson is masculine. Aside from crazy boosters of schools such as Alabama, OU, and Wazzu, would any man you know buy a CRIMSON sports car?
Anyway, how will the Bugeaters win this game? I would start by blitzing the hell out of Rhett. As Sooner Boomer nicely summarized, I think you too easily discounted the home field advantage, especially when you consider that this is OU's first REAL road game.
They played at UCLA in the Coliseum, which will always feel huge and empty compared to Memorial Stadium, add to that the fact that everyone in LA is on SC's jock and it doesn't make UCLA seem so daunting. Their two other "road" games, Texas and Kansas, were at neutral sites.
With a young quarterback making his first appearance in enemy territory I see the Blackshirts resuming their scoring ways. The Huskers will hit him hard and often. If AP isn't able to go, where will they turn?
Lets start with our friend's assesment of home field. While you have very good points about OUs road games, I'd like to know where the 10 point difference comes from! Was it worth 10 against Pitt and Maine? I hope not! Oh, also, its hard to call the Cotton Bowl non-partisan once VY started rolling in Dallas.
Blitz all day and any of OUs back will find room, let alone AD, who is supposed to be nearing healthy. You said yourself that with him at even 80% OU pulls it out.
As far as the '95 Champ team, they deserve to be recognized and I am even looking forward to seeing that! However, Bill Callahan and this team have no idea what the NU teams of the 90s were all about...thank God! Different time, different team. Once the ball is kicked that effect will be gone.
I'm sure it will be a good one!
The Cotton Bowl is always split evenly for the Red River Drive-by, it may have SEEMED non-partisan because the Sooner faithful didn't have much to cheer about after the first quarter, but it's always half orange and half crimson.
This is good, though, I enjoy the banter. This is what rivalries are supposed to be about and, at least for me, it's made the OU-NU week a whole lot better.
Wow!!! I couldn't have been more wrong. Even with all of the hype surrounding this game, the defense came out flat and the crowd was just as dead. I'm grateful we were able to claw our way back into the game. If it weren't for a few bad non-called penalties the outcome may have been a little different, but probably not. It was apparent that we really lack team speed and OU's superior talent showed.
On a separate note OU's band needs to learn a few more songs.
I couldn't watch any of this game and haven't even seen highlights yet, but this loss seems to follow the trend for the Huskers this season, early hole, late moxy, not enough. I'll have more to say about their season thus far later, which will be earlier, in the week.
Congrats to you random Sooner fan. I said if Petersen was at 80% the Boomers win and he said he was at 90, so there you have it.
