There was some question as to whether or not I actually wanted to watch a game that I knew Nebraska lost 23-3. The '83 or '94 Orange Bowls are one thing--tough losses, good games--but in this case I wasn't even going to get a touchdown. Nothing to even root for. I was going to see the option grounded, the Blackshirts shredded, Dr. Tom's red pants thumped yet again by more athletic pants from Florida. (In this case, green ones on Jimmy Johnson.) And to top it all off, the game was broadcast on FCS-Atlantic so I was going to have to sit through Steve Walsh and Cleveland Gary reminiscing about being recruited and waxing about how great it was to be a Hurricane out by some former teammate's pool.
But I watched anyway. I am ready for some football. Now. Anything...okay almost anything.
Emotionally detached, I figured I would just watch this rebroadcast with a curious eye and enjoy myself. I didn't.
I've had a serious craving for college football for about four weeks now, and, being the summer season, my Fox College Sports triumvirate has started to show all sorts of old games to get us ready for the fall. But as ready as I am already, I still have limits as to what I'll watch.
For instance, I don't give a damn about any of the epic games played between Arizona and Washington, but they seem to occupy all of the classic programming on the Pacific channel. The Atlantic channel, meanwhile, frequently shows Gators, 'Noles and 'Canes games from the 80s and 90s which, as we know, is rarely good for a Nebraska fan, but that's fine. I'm on their turf. If you're a baseball fan, you don't listen to the home team's broadcast and ask for an unbiased account.
My problem is with FCS-Central. Where are their classic games? Where are the teams from my neck of the woods? Nebraska won a couple of games in the past 25 years, but you'd never know it from watching during the summer. Even ESPN Classic, when it shows the Cornhuskers at all, generally shows them in one of the epic losses. College football is all about posturing. My team is better than your team and therefore my school, home, climate and regional delicacies are as well, but it's tough to feel that way about Nebraska through the summer. Sure the games are all 20 years old, but all NU does is lose.
Luckily, I may have found the answer on the FCS website:
Fox College Sports wants to know what you want to watch over the Summer. E-mail us at fcsprogramming@foxcollegesports.net and tell us what show you want re-aired!
Finally! As upstanding members of a Husker nation, I urge you to use this service. Flood that inbox and ask for a win, any win will do. I don't necessarily need a national title game, a random I-AA win would suffice, one of the mid-80s Sugar Bowls would be better.
Please, FCS, hear this plea. My sanity is at stake and we're still 60-plus days away from kicking things off for real.
