I really don't want to dignify T.J. Simers latest column with much of a response because if you gnash your teeth and wring your hands every time a big city columnists trots out the tired hick cliches while writing about Nebraska, well, then the Simers have already won. I refuse to live in fear, but I will say this:
The piece is not satire.
Satire is frequently funny and often socially relevant. Simer's column was neither. Satire can make the notion of consuming the flesh of babies seem hilarious. There was nothing funny about that column and I'd say that if I were from California or Kansas or Connecticut, not just Nebraska. It was simply lazy.
Thomas Swift, T.J. Simers is not.
