Amazing news out of Nashville...it's Hee Haw weekend on CMT! I've only been watching for 40 minutes, but already I've seen performances by Hank Williams Jr. and Buck Owens on his red, white and blue guitar, more pairs of overalls than an auction, and two moonshine jokes. Sure there's a lot of "corny" humor (about the same quality as that pun), but a trip down memory lane is always fun.
Hee Haw is probably the one show I unwillingly watched more than any other as a child. (Narrowly edging the evening news and 3-2-1 Contact.) My grandfather was always watching this show, and I was seemingly always at my grandparents so I absorbed my fair share of pickin' and grinnin'. Rather than catching another SNL rerun, which wasn't funny the first time, I urge you to flip to CMT at 12 am EST when they're showing the George Jones/Tammy Wynette episode from the 70s. I'm fully expecting the Possum to be in prime form.
Already I'm starting to see the how Junior laid the ground for Larry the Cable Guy, and that disturbs me to no end. But the examanation of the Redneck as marketing demographic and its relation to Hee Haw is a discussion for another time. Likely late next week. For now, I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy it.
And if Hee Haw weekend alone doesn't quench your thirst. Check out this video from Jenny Lewis. She puts all the actual girls of Kornfield Kounty to shame. (And check out the band's shirts in that video. It's Rockmount #6703)
