"It seems like we're in a pennant race," Piniella said last night after the loss. "I'm not too damn sure."
It doesn't really feel like it. In fact it feels more like April or May. I wake up every morning angry and amazed at the new and exciting ways the Cubs have found to lose. I don't want to watch the games right now but I'm powerless to stop. For two-plus months it was great to be a Cubs fan but now it's the same as it ever was and it makes me whiny.
I know, I know, they're still as close as they were one week ago but winning the Central is now their only viable option. Five teams top the Cubs in the wildcard standings meaning the only likely route to the post-season runs right through Milwaukee. Or, worse, St. Louis.
Maybe that's the real source of my current displeasure. I'd be happy to lose the division to the Cerveceros. Milwaukee would immediately become my rooting interest for October, but the Cardinals? That's almost too horrific to even consider.
